As we discussed in class, the thesis statement has important work to do in an expository essay. It needs to answer the question, responding in the language and logic if not the spirit of the prompt; and it needs to explain to the reader not only WHAT you will be arguing/defining/asserting, but also HOW -- i.e. what kinds of supportive claims you will be employing and what central line of reasoning will combine them. With all this in mind, please formulate a thesis and post it as a comment to this post before noon Sunday. Thanks!
Psycholinguistics is a subcategory of linguistics in which the cognitive processes that humans are equipped with to acquire, use, comprehend and produce language are studied. Though the definition of the field and the topics studied are generally agreed upon, the definition of language itself is where this concordance diverges. The theories of Universal Grammar and linguistic relativity propose the seemingly simple yet widely debated dilemma of what functions of language are innate and whether language determines thought or vice versa.
ReplyDeleteWith its influence unquantifiable, the discipline of public relations is one of ambiguity. The rise of social media has only thickened this ambiguity in that it is impossible to decipher the exact elements that shape a public opinion, one of the main aims of PR practitioners. In turn, the legitimacy of public relations as a discipline has been drawn into question, often being trumped by marketing and advertising. While the means of PR may be evolving, its purpose remains the same: forming an intangible public opinion or attitude, something not present in the product based realm of marketing and advertising.
ReplyDeleteHuman biology is a branch amidst the field of biology-- the study of living things. One would assume that a subdivision of a field would subsequently narrow and specify the essence that comprises human biology, but that is simply just that: an assumption. Although research and practice upon human biology is confined to a human body, the idea of human biology is so multifaceted that there are several realms that make up this single field of study and therefore identifying this as merely the study of the human body is an understatement.
ReplyDeleteAs evidenced by its goals and accomplishments in research and analysis of the past, the study of history is defined as a study that seeks to thoroughly understand the world and its inhabitants, through tracing patterns, linking causes and effects of phenomena, and comprehending events, decisions, and the reasons for their having taken place.
ReplyDeleteAt first look, the discipline of human biology appears to only include the examining of the various biological systems of the human body, as it appears to merely be a branch of biology. Human biology, however, is an integrated study which draws upon the disciplines of anatomy, endocrinology, biochemistry and physiology to present an overall dynamic understanding of the human body.
ReplyDeleteAs the subdivision of Psychology, Clinical Psychology is presumed to be the assessment and treatment of mental illnesses. Throughout the many years in practice, however, the field has expanded to serve other psychological purposes. Clinical Psychology integrates science, theory, and practice to understand, anticipate, and ease disabilities, mental disorders, and discomforts. It encourages personal development and improvement by focusing on behavioral, emotional, intellectual, and many other aspects of human growth and life span.

The act of pursuing economic success through the innovation of a new enterprise by meeting a need or want of society is the common thread in all entrepreneurship and can be found in many types of businesses both today and in history dating back many centuries. Entrepreneurship is not confined to simply starting a business, nor does it encompass all innovation.

Though the origins of the field are rooted in health and wellness, Health Promotion is a field that penetrates several professional industries, proving to be a field that is all encompassing and not solely dealing with health and medicine.
ReplyDeleteMany different ideas come to mind when an outsider identifies a communication scholar. To shed light on a field that relies to fancy terms and theories to make sense of it's functions, communication consumers have mislabeled the way humans exchange messages by labeling the field as plural "communications," falsely hinting that the field as a whole has pluralistic functions. Methods of research and testing have proved that communicating is entirely subjective which illuminates a clash with science and objectivity. Communicating is the process of rhetorically constructing a message to influence a audience.
ReplyDeletePublic relations is a modern-day discipline which seeks to utilize the changing technology and means of communication, marketing and advertising in order to promote, garner and manage attention for a brand. In this way, it is somewhat hard to define and even harder to identify its uses and operations. Unlike other disciplines, public relations is truly omnipresent. It factors into even our most mundane purchase decisions, as well as our perceptions and actions in everyday life. When once public relations was an imprecise practice often misunderstood and underestimated, our society now sees reputable companies working hand in hand with prestigious firms, cementing PR as a crucial component of our marketing and communications process.
ReplyDeleteCommunication is the study of both verbal and non-verbal exchanges both on an interpersonal and societal level, and has developed on a parallel plane to those of technological advances. While some people may assume that communication is simply studying how people talk to one another, it is the research and application of how to best understand these strategies used in the media and personal relationships, as well as portray messages in the best way possible.

The knowledge and studies of the past has shaped this profession by placing an emphasis on creating environments and public policies that promote health. Not only is it relevant to every health field, but it also inspires future health professionals to serve the society as a whole by being well educated about various factors that contribute to wellness and disease.
